d2768_metallica_killemall Guitar Hero: Metallica Doesnt Affect Rock Bands PlansWhen Activision stealth announced the release of Guitar Hero: Metallica via an SEC filing, fears of artist exclusivity gripped Rock Band fans. After all, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick had referred to Aerosmith as “proprietary” to the Guitar Hero format earlier this year.

We contacted Activision to find out if Metallica getting the titular treatment in a new Guitar Hero game meant that they’d be locked in to that particular brand. “We do not have further comment beyond what was in the SEC filing” read a corporate statement. No help there.

Harmonix reps, on the other hand, helped to calm our fears, if just a bit.

ps3 UK retailers slash Rock Band price by £40UK retailers slash Rock Band price by £40

68e86_425_rock-band-cover-cropped UK retailers slash Rock Band price by £40
Retailers in the UK are not adhering to the suggested retail price for the Euro Rock Band kit and are selling the whole thing for 40 quid cheaper than it was supposed to. The game disc alone costs a staggering £50 while the instrument set originally tacked on an extra £130. Listening to customer disapproval of such inflated prices, places like Play have dropped the price for the disc down to £39.99 and the instrument set down to £99.99. That’s a huge difference with all things considered.

Now, before you get all excited, just remember the PS3 version is yet to come out in Europe and doesn’t even have a solid date — this new pricing scheme is related to the Xbox 360 edition that came out last Friday. However, it should follow logically that the PS3 version, when it gets a release date, would see a similar discount. At least, we’re hoping so for the sake of our UK readers.

GHSkinz, a company that specifically makes skins for Guitar Hero and Rock Band instruments is now opening up a line of skins for handheld systems. The PSP is included, but unfortunately has the most ridiculously expensive ones at $10.95 a pop. That’s more than double the price that their Nintendo DS and iPod Touch lines go for.

That’s not to say that their products are not any good; the designs are quite beautiful — just have a look. It just makes us scratch our heads as to why the PSP gets screwed over with such a large bill. Anyway, that’s expensive in our minds but ultimately that’s up to you if you’re willing to pay the price.

6f348_200px-saintsoflosangeles Mötley Crüe Single Sells 5 Times More in Rock Band Than iTunesMotley Crue’s latest single ‘Saints of Los Angeles’ has sold more copies through Rock Band than through iTunes.

Last month Motley Crue became the first band to release a single through a video game.

Motley Crue’s management company, Tenth Street Entertainment, has said that, during the first week of release, ‘Saints of Los Angeles’ has sold 47,000 copies on Rock Band, while only selling a little over 10,000 through iTunes.

What’s important to note is that these figures only include sales through the Xbox 360. Total downloads through the Playstation network were not available. MTV Networks was unable to independently verify these numbers however.

These numbers tend to suggest that Motley Crue fans may be more the type to own Rock Band than, say, an iPod. That warms my heart.
