beijing olympic mascotNintendo’s exercise game Wii Fit has returned to the top of the videogames sales chart, 14 weeks after it was first released. The game, which saw a 17 per cent jump in sales over the last two weeks has occupied the top spot in the sales chart on four occasions since its launch.

Wii Fit uses a motion-sensitive board to encourage players to develop their balance, strength and fitness levels.

The start of the Olympics in Beijing certainly had an affect on new sales of the fitness game wii fit as well as boosting exposure of other wii titles, including another Nintendo Wii game, Big Beach Sports, and Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, in which the spiky blue hedgehog and portly Italian plumber go head to head in a series of athletic events.

In related Nintendo news, another Nintendo game, Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training, enjoys its 82nd week in the games charts, propping up the table at number 12. The game, which was released in 2006, is played on Nintendo’s handheld DS games console, and has been credited with bringing a whole new generation of “casual” players to the world of videogaming, especially women and young children.

wii Wii Fit Review: An Identity CrisisWii Fit Review: An Identity Crisis

Wii Fit Review: An Identity Crisis Following in the trailblazing footsteps of titles like Nintendogs and Brain Age, Wii Fit is another brainchild of Shigeru Miyamoto. The game was inspired by the practice of weighing oneself daily and, according to its creator, is more about self-awareness than it is about weight loss. The game that comes packed with a Balance Board peripheral doesn’t worry about plot or graphics or even new concepts in play, instead it focuses intently on motivating gamers to get on that board.

Wii Fit is in many ways the next step in Wii Sports, a title that boils gaming down to it’s most rudimentary elements of interaction and fun. But can even Miyamoto make tracking your BMI and doing Yoga interesting?

Nintendo is an odd company. While we won’t argue the merits of doing something like this, we will argue that Nintendo could’ve used some new games. Confused? So are we, so let’s break it down.

Basically, Nintendo is conducting an hour-long “beginner’s class” with Animal Crossing: Wild World and Nintendogs, in the hopes that they can show people how great their really old games are. In all seriousness, we imagine the classes will mostly revolve around introducing the device to skeptical folks, as well as the ease of using the stylus on the touch-screen. It all takes place at ACMI, Screen Pit Room, Federation Square, Flinders Street Melbourne, so if you’re anywhere near there this Thursday between 6:00pm - 7:00pm, show up and take some pictures.

Then send those pictures to us!

Once again, it is time for Art Attack Friday, or AAF for short. This week, the spotlight of awesome has fallen upon Bonus-kun, so named after the famous Bonus Kun from Waku Waku 7 (and you may have noticed the punching bag as you explore past stories on Dtoid too).

Aside from the Bonus Kun loving, Bonus-kun seems to be a giant Nintendo fan. For starters, just look at the above piece with the major Nintendo characters going all-out. There’s so much detail all over this such as Bowser crushing Pichu and Ganondorf about to Warlock Punch Toad and Peach. Then there’s the Earthbound love, with the teenage look of Ness and crew plus the animated gifs.

My favorite is easily the Wario meeting The Shining piece. Wario always looks like a psycho, so he’s just a perfect fit here. The zombie getting shot, based off of the House of the Dead games, is also another of my favorites of this week’s batch. Which did you like? Be sure to check out Bonus-kun’s deviantART for a few more pieces.
