Not to be outdone by its more innovative brother Rock Band, Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith revealed the Guitar Hero franchise has recently surpassed 15 million individual song downloads. The announcement was made during a recent earnings call where Activision also revealed future plans of the Tony Hawk, Call of Duty and James Bond licenses.
Viacom, owner of Harmonix, recently announced Rock Band has reached the 10 million song download mark.
It’s notable that the Guitar Hero announcement seems to relate to both Guitar Hero II (Xbox 360) and Guitar Hero III (Xbox 360 and PS3) downloads while the Rock Band announcement appears to be a combination of Xbox 360 and PS3 online sales. While Harmonix and Activision continue their urinating contest over numbers, we’ll just assume both are doing well in the content sales department for future reference.

Mike Griffith, the honcho over at Activision, has already released some statements regarding Guitar Hero IV (presumably). The statement? It’s coming sometime this holiday season. Griffith is already starting to talk up the title, claiming they’ve “put a lot of additional development resources, a lot of additional music licenses resources, a lot of additional hardware supplier resources against the title to fuel growth over next year”.
There are going to be some innovations for the next title — expect something more along the lines of Rock Band, like more instruments or vocals. That’s really all we know right now, but at least you know you’ll be plunking down more cash for more chances at heroism this holiday season.

In a conference call today Activision said that their DS rendition of Guitar Hero will be hitting stores in June, and Nintendo was so impressed by the controller add-on, that they’re allowing the hardware to be included with the game as a bundle set. Activision didn’t discuss price or specific release day, but it’s good knowing the game is coming sooner than later. Let’s hope it’s as awesome as the console version. [Joystiq]

During Activision’s conference call about their Q4 earnings, Activision dropped a relatively large bomb: in addition to the normal game/controller bundle, Guitar Hero: On Tour will be released as a bundle with both the Guitar Grip and DS Lite hardware. This portable Guitar Hero thing is much bigger than we thought, and this show of confidence on Nintendo’s part bears out Todd Greenwald’s prediction of big sales.
In addition, Activision’s Mike Griffith announced a new DS-exclusive Tony Hawk game to be released this year, that will “utilize new technology not yet seen on the DS.” Maybe it’ll be wheels, so you can ride your DS for real.
